Book Description:

This is a story about a boy and his very own special, particular, private, and personal cat—a cat he orders around, puts on his lap, and even dresses up and tucks into bed! But the cat has other plans, and its very own special, particular, private, and personal inner life. After all, everyone knows that you can’t ever really own a cat… The story’s climax, warm and friendly, yet firm, is all about how to claim the space we each need for ourselves. Many children and adults have undoubtedly felt just as this cat does!

Review:

If you (or your child) ever think that you can be the boss of someone else (such as a cat), this book will show the problem with that belief. The boy wants to be in control of his cat, since it belongs to him, but the cat is determined that cat belongs to cat.

I loved the playful nature of this story, the graphic and humorous illustrations, and the ending. Because even if cat wants to do cat things, cat and the boy can still be close to each other. Having boundaries doesn’t mean that a friendship is over, only that each party is allowed to choose what they will or won’t do.

This is a great book to start a conversation about boundaries, about ownership, and about friendship in general. I think you will enjoy it.
