There’s something magical about sitting down with your children and reading a story that captures the wonder of childhood belief. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is one of those special books that seems to cast a spell over both children and adults alike. Today, I’m excited to share my read-aloud of this beloved Christmas classic with you and your family.

About the Book

The Polar Express tells the story of a young boy who takes a mysterious train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. With its breathtaking illustrations and heartwarming message about the power of believing, this Caldecott Medal-winning book has become a cherished holiday tradition for families around the world.

Making the Most of Your Read-Aloud Experience

Before you gather your little ones to watch this read-aloud, here are some ways to make it extra special:

  • Create a cozy reading nook with soft blankets and pillows
  • Serve hot chocolate in special mugs (just like in the story!)
  • Have your children wear their favorite pajamas
  • Keep a small bell nearby to ring at just the right moment in the story

Discussion Ideas for After the Story

One of the beautiful things about The Polar Express is how it opens up opportunities for meaningful conversations with your children. Here are some questions you might explore together:

  • What do you think the bell sounds like to those who truly believe?
  • Why do you think some adults can’t hear the bell anymore?
  • What makes Christmas special to you?
  • What would you do if you could take a magical train ride to the North Pole?

A Personal Note

Every time I read this story, I’m reminded of the pure magic that exists in a child’s heart. In our busy world of screens and schedules, taking time to believe in something wonderful – something that can’t be explained or proven – becomes more precious with each passing year. I have yet to read this story and not choke up on the last page. To record the video, it took me three tries!

I hope this read-aloud helps your family create its own magical moment together. Whether you’re watching on a snowy December evening or in the middle of July when you need a touch of Christmas spirit, remember that the gift of sharing stories together is one of the greatest treasures we can give our children.
